Pups of Pride

Posted by Amy Hempe on

Despite Pride events being cancelled this year due to COVID19, June continues to be Pride Month. If you can't celebrate Pride with a large crowd, you can at least celebrate it with your dog.

Dogs show us unconditional love, even when we doubt our worthiness. Their refusal to waver in that love for us makes them the perfect companions for an event that rejoices in tolerance and inclusivity.

If you don't have specific Doggy-Pride costumes, homemade is always an option. Look for fun boas and colorful t-shirts and scarves. Rummage through your Halloween and Christmas decorations and outfits and repurpose a few. As a mountain gal, I have loads of bandanas. Those, along with Sophie's pumpkin costume can create a lovely Pride dress.

When you look at all of your colorful items hidden away in your dresser, you may find a Pride bonanza.

As for those of you who want to dye your dog's fur, be super careful. I mean unbelievably super careful. Never use human hair dye. This can cause burns and permanently damage your pup's fur and skin. Instead go to a professional groomer and ask for references. There are also safe dyes available for dogs, but do your research! And be prepared for the dye to stick around for a while.

There are many ways to celebrate Pride and it's a fantastic opportunity to unleash your creativity (see what I did there?). Dogs are family, and there is nobody better to show your pride in being who you are than with your family. Love is love is love.
